17 years after his big screen debut, Simba is still working hard for the mouse! Disney’s The Lion King 3D opened in the #1 spot this past weekend grossing near $30 million for the juggernaut. The Lion King has secured its spot in history as the third highest-grossing animated feature film of all time at the domestic box office. This most recent 3D release marks the fifth biggest September opening in industry history.

“The Lion King has proven again and again the transcendent power of great stories and characters,” said Rich Ross, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. “From the screen to the stage, this timeless classic continues to touch the hearts of audiences of all ages around the world.”

The beloved Disney film is also the first re-release to open at number one in the past 14 years. The movie will run on the big screen until it’s Blu-ray release on October 4th.

Today we say The Lion King in 3D. I can’t tell you how disappointed we were. We’d never seen the movie, so I suggested we finally see it since it’s now in 3D.The movie itself is great, but the 3D is so blurred it took an awful lot of of it. My husband thought it was him, but I told him I was also seeing a blur. A few seconds later, we heard the little boy behind us telling his father he didn’t want the glasses because it made the movie look blurry. I can’t believe Disney put it’s name on this product. We’ve been to Disney World several times and we are big Disney fans, but we were totally disappointed in the quality of the movie.
