Movie Description
1967's The Adventures of Bullwhip Griffin is a classic "fish-out-of-water" tale adapted from the Sid Fleischman novel, By the Great Horn Spoon. This Disney production stars Roddy McDowall, Suzanne Pleshette, Karl Malden and Bryan Russell.
On a quest to restore both his family's honor and lost wealth, young Boston lad Jack Flagg (Russell) stows away on a ship bound for California circa 1849. Loyal to a fault, the family's butler, Griffin (McDowall) joins. When very proper Boston and the wooly wild west mix, the results are frequently explosive and always hilarious.
The action is non-stop, and several familiar character actor faces appear, including Harry Guardino, Parley Baer, Mike Mazurki and Dub Taylor.
Long-time director James Neilson called the shots, a task he'd handled frequently on The Wonderful World of Walt Disney, as well as Bonanza, Batman and The Rifleman.
The Adventures of Bullwhip Griffin is guaranteed to get a laugh from practically all viewers, with McDowall at his bumbling, yet dignified, best.
