A Pixar Animation production in 3-D, Cars 2, the sequel to 2006's Cars, is an upcoming film that continues the blue-collar hijinks of racecar Lightning McQueen and redneck tow-truck Mater. Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy reprise their original roles as the voices of the characters. Distribution is by Walt Disney Pictures.
The inaugural World Grand Prix is the setting for the heroes, and as inconceivable as it sounds, Mater pulls double duty as an unintentional international spy. As expected, this premise leads to menacing secret agents, espionage and hair-raising car chases. Language difficulties ensue as the heroes try to decipher Japanese road signs. The "left-side" European traffic produces hilarious results as do Paris traffic circles and the ubiquitous Italian motor scooters.
Directed by John Lasseter and co-directed by Brad Lewis, Cars 2 utilizes an all-star cast that provides the many international voices, including Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer, John Turturro, Vanessa Redgrave, Franco Nero and Bonnie Hunt.
