Movie Description
The 1999 Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures sports documentary, Endurance, tells the inspiring story of Haile Gebrselassie, a long-distance runner from Ethiopia who prevails over overwhelming obstacles to win the gold medal in the men's 10,000 meter run at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. One potentially devastating event was the death of his mother, with whom he was very close.
As a child, Gebrselassie was always running; to school, on errands for his mother, even 3-hour jaunts to fetch water for his family. His style of running to school and back every day had a lasting impact, as in later years when he competed, he ran with his left arm crooked, as if carrying his school books. Motivated by the success of a fellow Ethiopian in the 1980 Moscow Olympics, he dedicated nearly his every waking moment to becoming a world-class endurance runner.
Portraying himself in Endurance, Gebrselassie is personable and engaging, displaying pride in his accomplishments, but also retaining the humility instilled in him as a child.
