Adapted from the lead character in the early-20th century Edgar Rice Burroughs work, Barsoom, Walt Disney Pictures production of John Carter is the story of a former Confederate Army captain-turned-astronaut who finds himself in the middle of a different type of civil conflict, only this time the battlefield is Mars, or as the natives refer to it, Barsoom.
Carter is taken captive by a barbaric race of 12-foot tall green-skinned, tusked creatures with six limbs. At one time, Barsoom was similar to Earth in terms of climate and inhabitability, but due to the planet's oceans evaporating and its atmosphere contracting, it reverted to a near dog-eat-dog world. Carter gains the respect of his captors with his physical strength and ability to defend himself, eventually becoming friends with Tars Tarkas, one of the leaders. When war breaks out between opposing factions, Carter, with his advanced military training and experience, plays a pivotal role.
Taylor Kitsch stars as Carter, with other notable cast members including Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe and Thomas Haden Church.
